Catch the Info - Review of Financial Aid Workshop for Seniors

Thank you to everyone who was able to tune in last week for the College Office’s Financial Aid and College Affordability webinar! We had the pleasure of hearing from Samantha Veeder from University of Rochester. While we were not able to record, Ms. Veeder’s slides have been added to the Naviance Document resources under the name Financial Aid Webinar Slides Fall 2023. (Find it by clicking the upper right hand side of your Naviance account and navigating to Documents).. You may also see it in the Document Hub on Talos at this link.

A few key foundational Financial Aid concepts:

  • The Financial Aid screening process (FAFSA, CSS Profile, Institutional Aid forms, etc) help the college understand the family’s ability to pay, not to be confused with willingness to pay.
  • The FAFSA release is delayed this year and the government has shared that the FAFSA will be released in December of 2023. Students and parents can set up their FSA ID now in advance of the FAFSA release.
  • Every college uses their own process for Financial Aid, visit each school’s website to learn which forms are required and what the deadlines may be.
    • If you have an EA or ED school that uses the CSS Profile, that form is already available and is often due in November, check your school’s website to confirm.

In Naviance Document Resources, you will also find another new document called Financial Aid Highlights Class of 2024 with additional information and key links. Use this long weekend as an opportunity to have an open and transparent family conversation about your family’s specific college budget, including if borrowing loans are right for you and what amount of loans might be financially healthy for your family. Review your list to be sure you’ve built a set of schools that will have a high chance of falling within your budget.
