Stuyvesant took first and second place in the first ever student forecasting tournament presented by the Alliance for Decision Education. More than 40 students competed in five rounds of competition over ten weeks and successfully forecasted gas prices, presidential approval ratings, stock prices, Taylor Swift ticket sales, and more. Throughout the tournament, students explored mathematical modeling, probabilistic thinking, scoring functions, data scraping and manipulation, and methods of eliminating personal bias from predictions. Students on the winning teams were each awarded a $500 scholarship, and Stuyvesant was awarded a total of $4000 in prize money for their success. All students who participated received a $100 award for their efforts.
The winning teams were “Wille the Pooh” (Christopher Louie, Christopher Shen, Ryan Radwan and Andy Huang) and “Limit DNE” (Rebecca Bao, Bingde Jiang, Edwin Lin, and Gloria Yip.) Congratulations to all, and thank you to Mr. Honner and Mr. Wille for supporting our students in this endeavor.
